Augharnath Mandir

The Augharnath Mandir is one of the oldest and the most popular temples in Meerut. Also known as the Kali Paltan Mandir, this temple is one of the important landmarks of Meerut having played a significant role during the struggle of freedom and more particularly the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. The Shivalinga of this temple is believed to have emerged on its own. It is not known as to when this temple has been built, although it is known that the Maratha soldiers prayed to the Lord here before they proceeded for the war. The presiding deity here is Lord Shiva and, hence, draws huge crowd during the festivals such as Shivaratri, Purnima and Amavas. Historical Significance of Augharnath Mandir in Meerut During the British rule, the Indian soldiers were called as the Kali Paltan or the Black army.
